Enjoyed the event last night. I thought the best idea to come out of it was the idea of an incubator in the city focused on business growth in Upstate. New Orleans has a very successful project along similar lines. http://www.ideavillage.org
One problem with much of the discussion last night was how unrealistic some of the suggestions were. It seems to me that Rochester needs to have a really honest discussion about what it is, and then it can look at that information and compare it to what people want to determine if it’s realistic. Rochester is relatively small, regional city and has the good and bad characteristics that go along with that.
The other comment that was brought up was the depleting tax base in the city. That, to me, is an easy answer. Until the school system is something less than the complete disaster it currently is, why would young families ever choose to live in the city? The city desperately needs to do more to attract businesses to the downtown area. Just walking Main St in the middle of the day is downright depressing and it could be much more vibrant if more businesses were located there.
